Starting any type of online business takes time, hard work, and consistency. Especially in a highly competitive and regulated market.
However, it is possible to start an online business as a one person operation, in your spare time. You can work at your own pace as you go to school or work a day job.
On the other hand, you can spend all of your time on it and make it your entire life. Either way, you can get results.
How do you start an online business of any type? Essentially, you need three things.
- A Decent Web Hosting Server
- The Knowledge and Skillset to Do the Work
- Time to Do the Work
Notably, this is an oversimplification. The second step in itself has at least a dozen steps in itself. After all, isn’t pretty much everything that way?
That’s the problem with “Steps” right? There’s always “Steps” within those steps. But people don’t call them “Sub-steps” do they?
A Decent Web Hosting Server
Anyone that’s new to the game of internet marketing, starting websites, and online entrepreneurship has no experience. Therefore, they make mistakes. Herein lies the most common “first mistake” so many newbies make.
The first big mistake you want to avoid is getting a really bad web server from a not-so-great hosting company. Again, it happens. Especially with people that are new and don’t know any better.
Sometimes people buy into the marketing or just go with what the first thing they find. There’s a lot of “smoke and mirrors” so to speak.
This next part is important.
You need web hosting. Save yourself the “research” or “going with the first thing” and get yourself Cloudways as your hosting. Done.
Why do I say this? Well, if you research all of the best web hosting, you probably won’t even find Cloudways.
This is because everything that pulls up is trying to make a quick sale comparing all of the cheapest top paying hosting companies. Those websites all make money to compare those.
Some of them might be good web hosting companies. However, most of them are shared hosting companies and some of them provide average to low end speed and service.
Do you think that’s what your top competitors are using? The answer is no… they aren’t.
Cloudways is fast, has great service, provides SSL encryption, a unique IP address, free server side caching… it has all of the actual “Best” things a web hosting company can provide.
Did you know that if your website takes more than 3 seconds to load, you will lose HALF of your potential customers BEFORE they ever reach your website?
I once knew a guy that started an online business using a free Godaddy web hosting plan. It came free with his domain purchase.
Remember what I said about going with what’s available and marketing? Yeah… he did this.
Out of the box, his website was taking 6 seconds to load. He couldn’t understand why his bounce rate was so high.
A bounce is when a user comes to your website, and leaves before, or as soon as your website loads. It’s because of the awful user experience of his really long, slow page load time.
So, start with a good web host. Start with Cloudways and you can build anything. You can also scale it up bigger if you need to at any time. At least go look at it.
The Knowledge and Skillset to Do the Work
If you don’t know how to build a website, optimize it, rank in the search engines, etc… Don’t worry. It’s not any harder than high school was. It’s actually probably a little easier.
What did high school require? Going 5 days a week, 7 hours a day, homework most nights…
Yeah, this is a lot easier than high school then.
Have a look.
There are ways that you can just learn as you go. For that, you can take a free or cheap online course.
Go ahead, look at it. It’s a 12 week online course that you follow along with. It starts from scratch and has you build along with it. From nothing to fully functional.
Also, it has a free trial. Then super cheap after that.
Basically, for free, or for the price of lunch, you have a template to follow along with to tell you exactly what to do and how to do it.
I specifically mention that online course because of its style of explaining, then following along. It covers everything from setting up your website, to ranking on page 1 of Google.
It covers how to write your content. Even if you hate writing.
Time to Do the Work
There are people that start a business on the internet in only a few hours per week. They don’t even work on it every week.
However, it’s important to note that the more time you spend on it, the faster you can see results.
Furthermore, it really just depends on what you are doing. A lot of factors depend on the type of internet business and the industry you are competing in.
Now, here’s the key…
The key is consistency. Be consistent. You can take a week off here or there from working on it. But whatever you do, don’t let it sit for months without you touching it. There are a lot of Algorithms at play here and they will see your business on the internet as becoming inactive. That is, if it gets stagnant.
So, be consistent and regularly update your content.
Regardless of the industry you are entering on the web, make sure you look at all of your local and national regulations. Don’t break the law. Get a license. Whatever you need to do.
When you start a business on the internet, it can seem like there’s a lot less regulation. Honestly, there IS a lot less regulation overall.
However, one of the best tactics you can do is this. Get all of your permits, licenses, etc. Then focus on meeting local regulations as if you were a small, local business in your community.
So, then when you launch your online business on the internet, you have yourself more covered legally from a local perspective.
There are so many businesses out there on the internet that operate globally, but are basically setup like a local small business with a “website” where they sell stuff, offer services, ad space, etc.
Note, you don’t have to get all of your business paperwork legally set up to get started.
In fact, go ahead and start your website AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Why? This is incredibly important.
Because the more your website ages, the more search engines will trust your website and rank your search results.
Now that’s not the only factor in web ranking. But it’s a very important one.
